Why is Engineering Popular in India?

With three lakh engineering graduates every year, JEE Entrance exam is the most popular exam for engineering with two levels of exams – JEE Main and Advanced. JEE Main is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for admission into engineering colleges. JEE Advanced is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) for admission into their engineering programs. The main reason for the popularity of engineering is the graduates are paid a grand salary. Engineers with a few years of experience behind them can take home over $100k per year. Salary packages are also related to the institute the student is graduating from. Engineers from IITs, NIITs and best university in Manipal are given a handsome salary packages.

Highest paid engineering disciplines are Petroleum Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, etc. Engineers from Indian Institute of Technology are one of the most highly paid engineers with reputable jobs. Some of the most successful people in the India are from IITs, namely; Sundar Pichai, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Google Inc, N R Narayana Murthy, Co-Founder and Ex-Chairman of Infosys, Sachin Bansal, Co-Founder of Flipkart. These successful men didn’t have to write the exams like JEE Entrance exam, CET, GATE. This makes us question, ‘If we really need entrance exams?’ which has been a topic of discussion for many educational administrators. Students’ intelligence cannot be measured by an exam. Exams measure students’ ability to explain a topic in a way such that it is understandable to others which is an important skill required in jobs in order to be able to express ideas and strategies.

Entrance exams are beneficial for institutes in filtering the candidates into the best institutes. Best University in Manipal is Manipal Institute of Technology, TA Pai Management Institute, to name a few. Manipal Institute of Technology ranked 39th by The Week. Graduates from these universities can be placed jobs in Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Information Technology in companies like Amazon, Cisco, Microsoft, Reliance, Mercedes Benz, etc. Students who cracked JEE Entrance Exam and graduating from these institutes also have the option for applying government jobs in organizations like Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC), Power Grid Corporation, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), etc.

Job postings for government and private jobs are posted on the organization’s website but also on job portals like Naukri, Ten Links, Times Jobs, 4Jobz, LinkedIn, IndiaJoining etc. Students are also advised to keep an eye on newspapers, poster, pamphlets and other Medias. We cannot ignore the fact that most engineer graduates are not employed in engineer jobs. In fact only 7% of graduating engineers are employable. The main reason for this can be that there is a huge imbalance in supply and demand of engineers. The institutes, other than the IITs, NIIT, and other big institutes, are not equipped to provide quality education in engineering where a degree certificate is the only aim of educators and students.
